Greendale Football Game Raised $12,000 For Hurricane Relief

It's an amazing total for a single football game. The relief efforts continue. Read more to learn how to get involved:

GREENDALE, WI -- While the school districts of Greendale, Greenfield, Pewaukee and South Milwaukee are competitors on the athletic field, these school communities are joining forces to take donations for Hurricane Relief and donating those items to the foundation of well-known Woodland Conference alumni, J.J. Watt of the NFL’s Houston Texans and the American Red Cross Hurrican Relief Fund.

Greendale High School Athletics Department raised more than $12,000 to benefit the JJ Watt Foundation at the Greendale vs Pewaukee Football game on September 1.

Funds were raised through t-shirt sales, admission and concessions proceeds, 50/50 raffle and cash donations. Greendale’s schools distributed funds to the JJ Watt Foundation and are continuing to collect additional funds through the end of September for Hurricane Relief.

From tailgate lunches to penny wars, students and staff are working together to raise money. School District of Pewaukee held a supply drive last week to launch the effort and filled nine semi-trucks with food, clothing, toiletries, and cleaning supplies. The trucks arrived in Texas over the Labor Day weekend and were unloaded by Watt and many of his Houston Texans teammates.

Pewaukee continues to support Hurricane Relief with classroom and community fund drives. School districts of Greenfield and South Milwaukee are also doing their part.

Greenfield’s Elm Dale Elementary School collected over $1,000 for hurricane victims. Its Glenwood Elementary School continues to collect funds with a goal of $1,000 by September 22. South Milwaukee schools are initiating student service projects to support the relief efforts.

“We have the chance to make this a great learning opportunity for our students, one that extends beyond the classroom and the core subject areas,” said Dr. Gary Kiltz, superintendent of Greendale Schools. “Times like these provide unique opportunities to bring our communities together in the spirit of giving and compassion for fellow citizens across our country. It’s a great lesson in service,
citizenship, and stewardship.”

These school districts will continue to collect donations through the end of September. The public is invited to participate. Community members are encouraged to check district and school websites that list the fundraising efforts and ways to get involved.
