Historic Police and Fire Building Now Up For Sale, Again

The Village of Greendale hopes to find a buyer for the vacant historic building this time around.

Greendale's historic former police and fire building, which has sat vacant for 15 years, has been put up for sale by the village once again.

The building's fate is woven into discussions of Greendale's downtown area and its future, and village officials are ready to relieve themselves of the property that costs between $4,000 and $10,000 to heat and maintain each year.

"It's a historic building, so it's only rightfully so that we have to give the building another shot," Village President John Hermes said.

But the building's sale does not ensure its continued existence. As reported by The Business Journal, the request for proposals is open-ended. This means that the buyer can choose to preserve the building or tear it down for a new development.

The building's future has stirred up some controversy, dividing Greendale between those who appreciate its value as a part of village history and those who see it as a hindrance to the economic development of Greendale's downtown.

The request for proposals can be viewed at the village website, and proposals are due to the village manager by September 27.

What should happen to the building? Tell us in the comments.
