Original Greendale Police Station To Get New Life

The building that served the Village since its founding in 1938 will be sold to a developer to convert it into offices.

GREENDALE, WI — One of the buildings that was an integral part of Greendale's founding in 1938 is being given new life after it has been sold to a developer.

Greendale was founded in 1938 by the Federal Government as one of three Greenbelt communities in the
Nation. In 1937 the Federal Government also built the building at 6600 Schoolway commonly referred to today as the Former Police and Fire Station. Over the years this building has actually served as the Village’s Police Department, Fire Department, Municipal Court and central heating plant.

On Jan. 24, the Greendale Village Board approved a Purchase Agreement to sell its Former Police and Fire Station at 6600 Schoolway Drive to Jason Cyborowski of J and J Contractors, and JJC Rental Properties LLC. The Village Board determined the proposal from Jason Cyborowski to use the building for offices, design center, showroom with office staff, and storage was the most favorable proposal for the renovation and reuse of the Station and to benefit the Village as a whole. The Sale is expected to be finalized in March of 2018.

The Station is a 2-story brick structure that contains approximately 4,200 square feet on the first-floor level, a
partial second level of 1,300 square feet and a partial basement of 2,900 square feet. The total building is
approximately 8,400 square feet. The building has been vacant and only used for storage since November 1998.

According to official documents, the Station is a component of the National Historic Landmark designation that the Village was awarded in October 2012. Terms of the sale include that the buyer must comply with certain rehabilitation standards, subject to review by the State Historic Preservation Officer.

The renovation plans are also subject to further review by the Village’s Plan Commission, require a public hearing, and additional approvals by the Village Board.

The Village solicited proposals to restore the Station to the greatest extent possible to its original as-built
appearance in October of 2017.
