Photos: Greendale Varsity Girls Tennis Host Triangular Tournament

Greendale, Catholic Memorial and Delavan-Darien varsity girls teams smash it out at the Village Club.

varsity girls tennis team hosted a triangular tournament Saturday morning at the Village Club; Catholic Memorial and Delavan-Darien were the visiting teams.  Matches were a mix of singles and doubles; each person/team rotated to face another opposing player or team for three rounds of seven matches.

When asked the one word that best describes his team, head coach Steve Mader replied, "Inexperienced".  The team consists of three freshmen, four sophmores, one junior and two seniors.  Despite their youth, the team holds a 3-1 conference record.

Coaching a young team requires spending more time on fundamentals and a lot more patience, says Mader, who has been coaching Greendale tennis since 2005.

"We need to put their feet in the fire and get kids as much match experience as possible."

Senior co-captains, Ruth Jensen and Mara Kuzmanovic, helped mentor their young teammates throughout the season.

"This is a good bunch of kids who work hard," said Mader, "but we have fun too."
