Shoppers Trapped In Southridge Mall Elevator

Greendale Fire Department officials said they used air bags to force the elevator doors open.

GREENDALE, WI — Seven shoppers, including five children, experienced a nightmare before Christmas after the elevator they were riding in got stuck.

According to a FOX 6 report, the incident took place Nov. 29 at about 9 p.m., which is near closing time for the mall. Police and firefighters eventually pulled the trapped shoppers out, but it took more than an hour to open the door after the elevator car got stuck between floors.

Greendale Fire Department officials said they used air bags to force the doors open.

"Just looked at the kids, everyone was crying and I can do nothing and I was scared too because it was a long time," said Ohoud Abu-Shawish to FOX 6.
