Uncovering Greendale's 'Hidden Statue'

The 'hidden' statue - a piece of Greendale history - was encapsulated during construction of a middle school addition in the early 1970s.

GREENDALE, WI -- Beginning on July 7, Greendale Schools and the Greendale Historical Society will launch a fundraising campaign for maintenance work on the Alonzo Hauser flagpole on the grounds of Greendale Middle School.

Additionally the effort will fund work to reveal and restore the hidden Hauser statue inside the
middle school building.

The ‘hidden’ statue was encapsulated during construction of a middle school addition in the early
1970s. The effort to open the wall to reveal and restore the statue is being conducted in conjuction with
the 80th Anniversary Celebration of the school district.

Greendale Middle School is the original Greendale school building and opened when the community was established in 1938. Hauser, a Wisconsin native, artist, and art educator, was commissioned by the Works Progress Administration of the Roosevelt Adminstration’s New Deal to create several sculptures in Greendale.
