200 Whitnall Middle School Students to Participate in 'Courage Retreat'

Youth Frontiers, a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization that specializes in delivering programs to build positive school communities and help young people realize the importance of respecting themselves and others, will hold a courage retreat on Friday, Dec. 6, at 9 a.m., in the Whitnall High School gymnasium, 5000 S. 116th St., Greenfield.

The courage retreat is an all-day event for approximately 190 Whitnall Middle School seventh-grade students. Whitnall High School juniors and seniors will volunteer as small group leaders.

Youth Frontiers retreats are focused on changing the way young people treat each other in the hallways, lunch line and classrooms. In 2013, the organization worked with more than 110,000 students and educators throughout the country.

“Last year, when the students talked about how they were going to be courageous and make their school a better place, it was quite emotional,” said Whitnall Middle School Principal Lynn Davies. “This retreat fits right in with our anti-bullying efforts and our PBIS program.”

Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports, or PBIS, promotes a safe, welcoming and purposeful learning environment by actively encouraging students to achieve their academic potential while also behaving with good character. Whitnall Middle School implemented PBIS at the start of the 2012-13 school year and was recognized by the state’s Department of Public Instruction as a PBIS school of merit in June 2013.
