5 Ways To Avoid The Horrors Of Winter In The Home

GREENFIELD, WI — Freezing cold temperatures have returned to Wisconsin after a brief warm-up, bringing back the hazards winter weather.

This remarkable photo of water pouring through an electrical outlet was taken by the Greenfield Fire Department on a call related to a broken water pipe. The department posted the photo on social media, "We continue to see property damage from the extreme cold and thaw cycles (picture is from today). Property owners and occupants should monitor their buildings, recognize problems and fix them immediately to prevent property damage," the department said.

According to Ready.gov, here are 5 things you can do to winterize your house (it's obviously not too late!)

  1. Make sure your home is well insulated and that you have weather stripping around your doors and window sills to keep the warm air inside.
  2. Make sure you have a working carbon monoxide detector.
  3. Keep fire extinguishers on hand, and make sure everyone in your house knows how to use them.
  4. Learn how to shut off water valves (in case a pipe bursts).
  5. Insulate your home by installing storm windows or covering windows with plastic from the inside to keep cold air out.
