57-Year-Old Man Dies On I-894, Hit By Semi Truck: Sheriff

Sheriff's officials say that a 57-year-old Greenfield man was hit by a semi-truck on I-894 late Thursday night.

MILWAUKEE COUNTY, WI — As the snow came down from Winter Storm Mateo late Thursday evening, authorities in Milwaukee County say that a man died on I-894 after he was hit by a semi-truck.

According to the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office, at about 11:00 p.m., deputies responded to a call about a crash on I-894 south just north of W. Howard Avenue in Greenfield on a report that a man was injured. When deputies arrived, two emergency medical technicians from LGH Ambulance Company out of Kenosha were already on scene performing CPR on an unconscious man who was laying in a lane of traffic.

Sheriff's officials said semi-truck driver had stopped near the scene and also called 911 to report that he had struck a man who had run in front of his truck. The man's car was found in the right distress lane, and was not running or have its lights on.

Greenfield Fire Department paramedic units arrived and took over life-saving efforts. According to investigators, the man, identified as Thomas Romanowski, 57, of Greenfield, suffered massive chest trauma and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The freeway was closed until 4:00 a.m. while crash measurements were taken. Sheriff’s Office detectives are conducting the death investigation.
