After Three Decades, Dave's Produce Stand Still Going Strong

The small stand has been a staple of the community for 34 years.

As a boy, Dave Ewig helped his grandfather on his farm with crops of tomatoes, corn and cantaloupe.

At age 16, Ewig, the owner of operator of on the corner of Highway 100 and Beloit Avenue, opened his first fruit stand, selling fresh produce from his grandfather’s farm.

"The original location was right across the street from where we are now," Ewig said. "Then we had a shop on the corner of Forest Home Avenue and Morgan Avenue. Finally, we settled here and we’ve been here ever since."

That was 34 years ago, and the stand, which is open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. from April until December, has bustled with customers during its short seasons ever since.

No matter the weather conditions, the sliding garage doors of the stand remain open to the public throughout the spring, summer and fall.

"It can get a bit cold in the later months, but it tends to be our busiest time for things like seafood with Christmas and New Year’s around the corner," Ewig said.

The stand sells imported seafood in addition to domestically grown vegetables and fruits.

"Once the season has come into full swing, we offer our patrons locally grown produce, but due to the weather, it can take until July for that to officially begin," Ewig said. The summer produce comes from farms surrounding the Milwaukee area.

Flowers hanging in baskets and laid in rows of beds surround the fruit stand making it hard to miss on the busy street. The week’s specials are listed on a punch board sign with flashing lights. On any given day, you can find Ewig working the cash register.

“We are a simple place with top-notch quality products,” he said. “We’ve been here for so long, I doubt there are many out there that haven’t at least driven by if not shopped here at some point in the past 34 years. But if there is anyone that hasn’t already come by, please do. We promise you’ll enjoy what you find.”
