Alverno College Examines Struggles of African Americans in City

Presentation looks at the struggles African Americans in Milwaukee have faced trying to attain civil liberties

Alverno College will present Liberty For All! African American Civil Liberties in Milwaukee. The presentation, given by guest speaker Reggie Jackson, will take a look at the struggles African Americans in Milwaukee have faced trying to attain basic civil liberties. He will look at the issue through an historical lens to see how civil liberties have been denied in the past, and how they are still denied today.

Jackson has been a speaker, author and media consultant on Black Holocaust topics regionally and nationally for over a decade. He is currently serving as the education liaison for a workforce development firm, and previously worked as an adjunct professor at Concordia University and as a special education teacher in Milwaukee middle schools. Jackson first volunteered with America’s Black Holocaust Museum in 2002. In 2006, Dr. James Cameron, founder of the museum, passed away. Since then, Jackson has served as an expert on the life of the unsung civil rights leader. Jackson is the 2015 winner of the Eliminating Racism Award from Southeast Wisconsin’s YWCA, the 2016 winner of the Courageous Love Award from the First Unitarian Society of Milwaukee, and the 2017 winner of the Frank P. Zeidler Public Service Award from the City of Milwaukee.

The presentation will take place on Thursday, November 9 from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. in the Bucyrus Conference Center. The event is free and open to the public, but guests should register in advance at alverno.wufoo.com/forms/liberty-for-all.
