Blue Angels Put Out Inferno, 3-1

MILWAUKEE -- Visiting Mount Mary College defeated host Alverno College, 3-1, tonight in Reiman Gymnasium in a nonconference match.

The Blue Angels (7-9 overall) started out the match with a .345 attack percentage in the first set, as they committed just one error in 29 attempts for the 25-11 win. The Inferno, meanwhile, posted just a .027 attack percentage as they committed eight errors in the opening set.

In the second, Alverno (3-18 overall) had the hot hands as the host hit a blistering .520 with 15 kills and just two errors on 25 attempts. Chelsea Gulbronson ended the set with four-straight serves, which included a pair of aces.

The Inferno led early in the third set, 8-3, but the Blue Angels rallied to tie things up, 11-11. After a back and forth set, Mount Mary took a 24-20 lead, but Alverno rallied to tie it, 24-24 on an Emma Ortner kill. Four consecutive was all the Inferno would manage, though, as the Blue Angles' Chelsea Beeler connected for a kill on the next point, and Dani Christian ended the set with an ace for a 26-24 win.

After trading points to open the fourth, the Blue Angels took a 3-2 lead and remained in front the rest of the way for a 25-18 final set and match victory.

Ortner led the Inferno with 15 kills, while Cali Trepp and Mariah Arterberry added 10 kills apiece. Reagan Owen had a match-high 39 assists for the Inferno.

On the defensive side of the net, Gulbronson, Ortner and Trepp all had a team-high 13 digs, while Owen added 10.

The Blue Angels were led by Stephanie Hardwick's match-highs of 18 kills and 15 digs.

Alverno has a week off to regroup until its next match. The Inferno will look to snap its current eight-match losing streak at Aurora University on Oct. 16, 7 p.m.
