Digging in the Dirt Again

It's spring and time to return to your vegetable garden.

Welcome Spring! Finally, the weather has started to return to more normal temperatures. Even the farmer's new baby chicks can't wait to scratch in the soil. So now is the time to return to the vegetable garden.

If you tilled the garden last fall, you can check to see if your soil has dried out enough to plant. To check, grab up a handful of soil and see if it will crumble when moved around in your hand. If it stays in a clump, your soil has not dried out enough for you to plant yet. Give it another week, with dry weather and try again.

When your soil does dry out, you can then turn over the soil, and do the clump test again.

When your soil does crumble in your hand, you can start sowing new seeds in the soil.

Now is a great time to sow seeds of: carrots, kohlrabi, lettuces, onions, peas, radishes, spinach, and swiss chard. Do keep a record of where each row of seeds are located. So when the seedling start to poke thru the soil you can identify what is a weed and what is your new emerging seedlings. Lightly cover your seeds with soil and water sparely, as not to disturb the newly planted seeds.
