Inferno Sets School Wins Record, Sweeps 'Saders In Season Finale

Alverno picked up its 17th and 18th wins of the season, which set a new school record, as the Inferno swept the visiting Maranatha Baptist Crusaders, 9-1 and 5-4.

Alverno College picked up its 17th and 18th wins of the season, which set a new school record, as the Inferno swept the visiting Maranatha Baptist Crusaders, 9-1 and 5-4, in the team's final series of the 2013 season. The 18 victories broke the former record of 17 set just a year ago.

The Inferno (18-18, 10-14 Northern Athletics Conference) jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in game one, as Stef Wilmore and Erika Wotnoske had RBI hits in the opening-frame.

After the Crusaders (2-28, 1-23 NAC) plated their only run of the game off a wild pitch in the fourth, the Inferno quickly matched the score with an RBI-single by Sam Kasprzak on the bottom of the inning.

Wilmore, Ashleigh Sagat, Kasprzak and Stephanie Skibba all connected for RBI hits in the fifth for an 8-1 lead.

Lauren Colette tripled to right field to lead off the bottom of the sixth, and just two pitches later Emily Ortner scored her teammate on a sacrifice fly to end the game with the eight-run rule.

Jamie Villalobos and Erin Dulek split time in the pitchers circle and recorded five strikeouts apiece, while the Crusaders' Hannah Clement (2-16) also had five Ks, but allowed 11 hits in the loss.

Maranatha scored three first-inning runs in the nightcap off four hits and three runs, before Ortner put the Inferno on the board with a solo home run in the bottom half of the first.

Sagat led off the fourth with a homer to left field to cut the deficit to a single run, scored Wilmore off a RBI-single in the fifth to tie the game at 3-3, and finally scored to put the Inferno on top later in the inning.

Villalobos came around to score in the sixth after she reached on a single up the middle for a two-run cushion, which the Inferno needed as the Cruasders' leadoff batter in the final inning reached on an error and scored. The Crusaders left runners at the corners to end the game as the Inferno escaped with a strikeout and a pop-up.

Dulek (7-4) pitched the complete game and picked up her second victory of the day with another five strikeouts, while Jana Dempsey (0-12) surrendered 12 hits and was tagged with the loss.

Entering the two-game series, Alverno needed just four runs to break the single-season scoring record and the 14 on the day set the new record at 234 runs.
