Inferno's Season Concluded At Individual Tourney

The Alverno College tennis team concluded the 2012 season at the Edgewood College Invitational in Madison on Saturday.

MADISON, Wis. -- The Alverno College tennis team concluded the 2012 season at the Edgewood College Invitational in Madison on Saturday. All eight Inferno players competed in the individual tournament in both singles and doubles action.

Just two Inferno players advanced to the winner's bracket in their respective flight, whileAlexandra Madsen went 2-1 in a round robin format for a second-place finish in the No. 8 singles flight.

Damanique Drake advanced to the No. 5 singles championship match with a three-set victory over Marian's Sarah Brooker in the semifinals. Drake came from behind after a 6-1 opening-set loss, and won the second and third 6-3 and 10-6.

In the championship match, Drake battled back from a 6-2 defeat in the first set and evened the match with a 6-3 win in the second. Edgewood's Sarah Rendon just edged out Drake for an 11-9 third set and match victory.

Libby Kent advanced to the No. 4 singles semifinals after she won her quarterfinal match over Marian's Chelsey Will, 6-1, 7-6 (7-5), but lost the semifinal match to Brooke McBain of Edgewood, 6-3, 6-0 and was also defeated in the third-place match by Edgewood's Ashli Paulson, 6-1, 6-1.

In the No. 1 singles round robin, Tricia Goska went 1-2, as she won her final match, 6-1, 6-3, over Dominican's Rachel Taddy.

Abigail Kohal went 1-2 in the No. 2 singles bracket with a win in the consolation semifinal over Lakeland's April Schmitz, 6-3, 7-5.

In the No. 3 singles bracket, Lin Liu lost her opening match, but finished strong with a pair of wins, including a 7-6 (7-4), 6-3, victory over Dominican's Jillian Metcalf in the consolation championship match.

Ashley Schmeling also won the consolation side of the No. 6 singles bracket with a 6-3, 6-3, victory over MSOE's Melanie Avery.

Doubles action didn't fare so well for the Inferno, as the four doubles teams went a combined 3-8 at the event.

The duo of Kent and Schmeling picked up two of the victories and won the No. 3 doubles consolation championship with wins over Marian in the consolation semifinal and MSOE in the consolation final.

Earlier in the week, the Inferno finished dual play with a 4-8 overall record (3-8 Northern Athletics Conference).
