Whitnall Spring Sports Set Back Because of Rain

As the spring sports for Whitnall High School start, they're already battling to get over the rain that has been going on.

Whitnall High School coaches and athletes are having early complications with the start of spring sports due to this lasting rain.

The sports that are currently being affected are track, golf and tennis. Some teams will be able to overcome this problem, but a few are not so lucky.

“If it rains, we can’t practice or play games,” senior tennis player Tony Domitrz said. “When it rains and we can’t practice, we end up becoming rusty and not ready to start playing. We already have had two games cancelled and haven’t played or practiced in over a week. Meets don’t get rescheduled because of how busy every team is. Teams practice and play almost every day, so it’s hard to plan new meets.”

The tennis team is having a rough start because of the rain, and the next week's forecast isn’t looking that great either. Luckily, the golf team has some ways of getting over the conditions, although it too is having issues.

“There’s always a substitute indoors, however it isn’t as good as being outdoors,” said golf coach Mr. Baumann. “We can do putting practice in the library, and practice some other skills as well. If we play when the grass is damp, it makes a game of golf not fun and can only play some mind games with you.”

A good thing for the golf team is that meets can be easily rescheduled. They play against one team at a time usually, so its just a matter of finding when the other team is available. However, this current rain is messing up a lot of practices and meets for both teams, and is making the players a bit out of the mindset they should be in.

Even the track team is getting caught up in the rain, even though they have had a lot of indoor meets so far.

“I’m ready for this rain to be over so I can finally pole vault,” senior Andy Karwoski said. “The indoor meets are fun, but I’d rather have outdoor meets. After a while, the rain gets annoying and boring. There isn’t as much to do either compared to outdoors.”

There was rain every day last week, and this week it’s looking to be almost the same with rain at least three out of the five days. How will all the precipitation play out? Only time will tell how all the teams are able to get over it.
