Warriors Defeat Inferno, 8-1, In Musical Chairs Dual

Alverno and visiting Wisconsin Lutheran played a game of musical chairs -- with bits of a tennis dual in between -- but the Warriors left the third and final location of the night with an 8-1 victory.

WHITEFISH BAY, Wis. -- The Alverno College Inferno and visiting Wisconsin Lutheran College Warriors played a game of musical chairs -- with bits of a tennis dual match in between -- but the Warriors left the third and final location of the night with an 8-1 victory.

The dual between the two Northern Athletics Conference foes was supposed to take place back on Sept. 13, but Mother Nature washed out the originally scheduled contest.

Today, Mother Nature again influenced the schedule of events. The dual was set to begin at 3:30 p.m. at Nicolet High School in Glendale, but before any matches began, the rain was falling. Therefore, the teams packed up and headed indoors to North Shore Elite Club.

With limited court time due to previously scheduled events, the Warriors (11-3, 10-1 NAC) swept the Inferno (3-8, 3-8 NAC) in doubles play and won a pair of singles matches for a 5-0 lead, before the teams packed up and moved again for the final four singles matches.

The Inferno's Tricia Goska and Abigail Kohal nearly squeaked out a No. 1 doubles victory, but lost in extras, 9-7.

In the final location of the night -- Cahill Park in Whitefish Bay -- the final four matches were completed under the lights.

The Warriors took the No. 2-6 singles matches in straight sets, but in the No.1 singles match, Goska battled WLC's Kathryn Hendee to a third set after a 4-6 first set loss and a 6-4 second set victory.

With the team result already determined, the duo would play a 10-point tiebreaker in the third set. Goska rallied and finished ahead 10-6 for her third singles victory of the season at the No. 1 spot.

The Inferno concludes dual play tomorrow as its hosts Mount Mary College in nonconference action. The dual is set to begin at 4 p.m. at Nicolet.
