Whitnall Prepares for its Upcoming Musical 'Godspell'

Students around Whitnall are beginning to prepare their auditions for their upcoming musical, Godspell, at Whitnall High School on March 21-23, at 7:30 p.m. and March 24 at 2 p.m.

Godspell, originally directed by John-Michael Tebelak with music by Stephen Schwartz, is “one of the biggest off-broadway and Broadway successes of all time,” said Whitnall musical director Thomas Weissgerber, who is in his second year as the director. 

The main plot of Godspell is portrayed in the way the players interact with their leader and coming together to create a loving community. The characters in this show find love through the teachings of a charismatic individual. 

This play brings stories to life for the audiences by using “theatrical devices including vaudeville, puppetry, story theater, and varied song stylings,” Weissgerber said.

Whitnall senior Jackie Gruszka said, “I have always enjoyed watching the musicals. There are awesome performances and songs. It reminds me how talented my peers are!”

The musical will be directed by Weissgerber, with musical direction by Todd Stacey, and choreography by Karl Miller.

The money raised from musicals goes to support the theatre department at the high school. In past years, musicals have made anywhere from $3,000 to $5,000.  Typically, the attendance is around 1,000 people.

Whether students are performing in the musical or planning to be in the crowd, everyone is becoming excited over the next musical in March.
