Cuteness Alert: Greenfield FD Rescues 12 Ducklings From Storm Drain
Storm drains prove perilous for ducklings. Find out what you should do if you encounter ducklings that need help.

GREENFIELD — The Greenfield Fire Department made a rescue of the fowl kind this week, pulling 12 ducklings from the bottom of a storm drain using mesh nets they carry on their rig for such an occasion.
CBS 58 reported on the story and checked in with the Wisconsin Humane Society about this seasonal occurrence.
Greenfield firefighter Richard Shircel explained to CBS 58, "Try to scoop up as many as possible, a lot of times the mother duck will be close on hand trying to call for the baby ducks to come back. If they drop into a sewer pipe, we’ll drop down a hose and try to flush out and try to catch the rest of the ducks."

According to the Wisconsin Humane Society, they're literally swimming in ducklings this spring - they have 83 of them that have been orphaned. When they're old enough, they'll be released back into the wild.
If you ever encounter ducklings that need your help, the best advice, firefighters say, is to give them a call — they'll be ready.
