2 Thursdays, November 1 – 8
During the Baroque period in art history, artists departed from the 15th and 16th century harmony of Renaissance art and responded to the dynamic times of kings, power, war, new science, more secular religion, extravagant theater and excesses of wealth. About this era, John Donne wrote, “’Tis all in pieces — all coherence gone.”
A substantial collection of Baroque art by well-known old masters is housed at Kenwood House, London’s finest country residence. Exceptional pieces from this collection will be on exhibit at the Milwaukee Art Museum from October 12 through January 6. Included are works by Rembrandt, Van Dyck, Hals, Gainsborough, Reynolds, Boucher and more.
