Firefighters Rescue 2 Dogs, Cat And Bird From House Fire

Initially, it was thought that all animals were dead. Then, a first responder noted that some of them may be alive.

GREENFIELD, WI — Just after 1 p.m. Friday, the Greenfield Fire department, Milwaukee Fire department and Greenfield Police departments were called to a home in the 6900 block of Allerton Ave. for smoking coming out of a home.

According to the Greenfield Fire Department, firefighters found a fire in the building, made entry into the home, and began to extinguish the fire. In the process, they rescued several dogs, cats and a bird from the home. Initially, it was thought that all animals were dead.

According to Greenfield fire, a first responder noted that some of the animals were still alive and with the fire under control, a couple of Greenfield Firefighter/Paramedics and Greenfield Police Officers treated the pets.

Officials said that two dogs and one cat were taken to Milwaukee Emergency Center for Animals. Unfortunately, the cat did not survive, though officials say that the two dogs - a bloodhound and a lab - are recovering well.

"While Firefighters, Paramedics, Police cannot change every outcome, they give tremendous effort trying to improve whatever outcome they can for those we serve," the Greenfield Fire Department said in a prepared statement.

The fire is under investigation by the joint Greenfield Police - Fire Investigation team.
