GREENFIELD, WI — He's quirky, he's zany and he's got a decent slider. Milwaukee Brewer pitcher Brent Suter will be a guest speaker at Glenwood Elementary and it has everything to do with plastic straws.
First graders at Greenfield’s Glenwood Elementary have been studying the topic of plastic pollution over the 2018-19 school year. In September, Glenwood first graders counted the number of plastic straws the school uses in one day, which lead to researching the evolution of the straw, and then to the effects of single use plastic to our oceans.
First graders soon became change-makers by creating service announcements, and implementing a “No Straw Day” at the school. The students then gave a presentation to District Superintendent Lisa Elliott in the hopes of convincing her to go plastic straw free for the whole district.
