Greenfield Offers a Somber, Chilling Tribute to 9/11 Victims

The planting of 2,977 flags neatly in soil for each life lost on Sept. 11, 2001 is another chilling reminder of the innocent lives lost.

GREENFIELD -- 2,977 American flags are on display in front of Greenfield Fire Station 91 and the Greenfield Police Department on Layton Ave. in honor of every life that was lost on Sept. 11, 2001.

If you've ever walked along the paths at Wood Memorial Cemetery, or seen the traveling Vietnam Wall of Remembrance, you can feel how the size and scale of each memorial site serves as a chilling reminder of the high cost of human life.

Of the 2,977 killed:
- 2,606 killed in the World Trade Center Towers including 343 Firefighters, 60 Police officers, 2 Paramedics.
- 246 airliner passengers killed
- 125 killed at the Pentagon.
