Greenfield Police go Washington D.C. to Talk Heroin Treatment

Wisconsin would be eligible for up to $13 million in funding over two years to expand treatment under Obama budget proposal.

GREENFIELD - Representatives from the Greenfield Police Department are on their way to Washington D.C. Wednesday to discuss funding for treatment of opiate and heroin addiction.

According to Greenfield Police, Chief Wentlandt and Detective Sergeant DeGlopper are enroute to participate in the discussion.

Chief Wentlandt will meet in the West Wing with senior policy advisors then join Detective Sergeant DeGlopper for a forum in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building.

According to a WISN report,Greenfield police say 143 people overdosed last year on heroin. An injection of the opiate antidote Narcan was able to save 16 of them.

The Obama Administration is asking Congress to pass a $1.1 billion in funding to fight opiate and heroin addiction. Under the President's budget proposal, Wisconsin would be eligible for up to $13 million in funding over two years to expand access to treatment for opioid use disorders.

According to the WISN report, the Department of Health & Human Services wants to expand access to treatment, including making it easier to get medication used to treat opioid disorder. HHS officials also want to get rid of financial incentives for doctors to prescribe opioids.
