Greenfield Soccer Team Picks Up First League Win

The Hustlin' Hawks opened the Woodland Conference season against Cudahy/St. Francis.

The  got the 2011 Woodland Conference season off to a fast start with a 2-1 win over Cudahy/St. Francis on Monday.

After a Cudahy/St. Francis foul, David Castillo pushed a well-paced ball towards the goal where senior Partick Medely was making a run for a header. The ball missed Medely and sailed past the goal keeper into the back of the net for the eventual game-winner.

"It was our first conference game and I knew that our guys were feeling a bit nervous," Greenfield coach Steve Larson said. "We did what we had to do; that's what matters. I would have liked to see more goals out of our guys, but we'll keep working hard and they'll come."

Greenfield (3-2-1 overall, 1-0 conference) took a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute when sophomore Kyle Holmes scored with a nicely placed header to the back of the net off of freshman David Castillo's corner kick.

The Hustlin' Hawks were unable to capitalize on numerous first-half opportunities, according to Larson.

", we had countless looks on goal but could only make one of five shots on goal," the coach said. "We possessed and moved the ball well, but couldn't find the back of the net."

Cudahy/St. Francis tied the score in the 57th minute on a penalty kick.

The Greenfield junior varsity team won, 10-0, in its first match of the season.

The varsity's next match is at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at Whitnall.
