Honoring Decoration Day

We have good news for you and your Memorial Day weekend—the weekend forecast is 68% on Saturday, rising to 80% on Monday, and only a 30% chance of rain all weekend. We know very well that this forecast can change at a moment’s notice, but that fact notwithstanding, your Memorial Day barbeque should have perfect weather!

Sometimes in the rush and excitement of a 3-day weekend, of the promise of summer, of the chance to catch up with friends and family, we forget the meaning behind the holiday we’ve promised to memorialize. This Memorial Day, take time out to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice protecting our freedom at United States citizens. For example, did you know that Memorial Day was originally known at Decoration Day? Communities honored their fallen soldiers by decorating their graves on this day.

As you drive around this coming Monday morning, notice all the flags at half-staff—the flag was raised momentarily to the top of the staff before being lowered. POWs and MIAs are also honored on this day with their respective flags.

Communities around the United States honor the holiday in different ways, some with parades, some with visits to national and local memorials. Some families spend the day visiting veterans in homes and hospitals. Others take the opportunity to dive into family history, remembering their ancestors.

At JB’s on 41, we like to remember those who served, too. This Memorial Day, all veterans bowl for free. If you’re a veteran, you’re welcome at JB’s on Memorial Day: we want to thank you for your service. Bring your family and friends and make it a party! Memorial Day is a day to remember those who gave it all in service to their country, and, in thanks, we’d like to honor our local vets with a free day of bowling—it’s the least we can do.
