Inferno Defeats Cougars For First Win Of Season

The Inferno battled the Cougars of Concordia University Chicago and edged the hosts 5-4 for Alverno College's first win of the 2013 season.

The Inferno lost its second dual of the day, 6-3, versus host Dominican University at Forest Park this afternoon.

The number-3 doubles team of Devin Bach and Charmaine Clark defeated its CUC (1-5, 1-4 Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference) opponents, 8-6, for the lone Inferno point in doubles play to begin the dual contest. It marked the duo's first win of the season.

Needing points in at least four of the six singles matches, the Inferno got just that, as it collected victories in the number-1, 4, 5 and 6 matches.

Sam Kasprzak downed her opponent 6-2, 4-6 and 10-6 in the number-6 contest, whileLaeren Yates won the number-4 match 6-3, 0-6 and 6-4.

Both Clark and Jordanna Farkas won their matches in straight sets. Clark took the number-5 match, 6-1 and 6-4, while Farkas won 6-3 and 6-2 in the number-1 match.

Unfortunately, the Inferno (1-6, 1-4 NACC) was unable to pull out its second team win of the day as the Stars (4-5, 4-4) rode a 3-0 doubles lead to the win.

Alverno was even in singles competition as Farkas breezed by her Dominican opponent in straight sets 6-0 and 6-1 for her second win of the day. Clark came back after a 6-4 opening-set loss to win the final two sets and the match 6-3 and 10-7, and Yates was awarded the team point as her opponent was retired due to injury.

Alverno continues conference play versus host Wisconsin Lutheran College on Wednesday at Hart Park.
