Lottery Scam Targeting Wisconsin Residents

Reported e-mail scam targets residents willing to volunteer personal, financial information.

If an e-mail appears in your inbox appears too good to be true, it probably is.

Wisconsin Lottery officials are alerting people to be aware of an e-mail scam that has been reported in the area.

In the scam, people receive an e-mail often telling them they have won, but need to send a processing fee or divulge personal information like a credit card or social security numbers, according to information released Tuesday by Wisconsin Lottery officials.

The Wisconsin Lottery wants to remind players that they never require fees when winners claim a prize, nor does the Lottery ever ask for personal information over the telephone or in an e-mail.

Wisconsin Lottery officials ask people to be aware of potential scams and use caution if they are contacted about winning a lottery prize.

If you get a questionable phone call, e-mail or letter, contact the Wisconsin Lottery Player Hotline at (608) 266-7777.

According to lottery officials, people who want to file a consumer complaint about a lottery scam can do so online at datcp.wi.gov or a complaint form can be requested by calling the State’s Consumer Protection Hotline at 1-800-422-7128.
