Man Flees Police at 100 MPH, Falls 25 Feet Off Road: Police

Police reported that a man failed to negotiate a curve in the road at 100 miles per hour, and fell 25 feet, all while looking at his phone.

According to reports, the officer spotted Brandenburg's Caravan driving at about 100 miles per hour through several intersections. To the pursuing officer, the front tires of Brandenburg's vehicle appeared to be sparking and was traveling without his lights on.

As the Greenfield officer tried conducting a traffic stop, Brandenburg fled. He made it as far as a curve in the road at the intersection of Oklahoma Ave. and National Ave. before he lost control, according to the criminal complaint.

Reports state that Brandenburg failed to negotiate the curve, jumped the curb, went off the road. His vehicle dropped 25 feet, where he struck a concrete retaining wall. Police watched as Brandenburg's vehicle then ricocheted off the retaining wall, struck a utility pole, and then another vehicle that was driving on the Root River Parkway.

According to the criminal complaint, the Greenfield officer approached the crippled Caravan and arrested Brandenburg at gunpoint. The officer reported that he could tell there was a smell of marijuana coming from Brandenburg, and believed he was driving while he was impaired by the drug.

The criminal complaint states that as Brandenburg was being driven to the hospital, he willingly said that he should have stopped at the curve because he was looking at his phone and trying to get directions during the chase. He also told police that he was afraid because he was on probation, and a fight-or-flight mentality kicked in.

According to court records, Brandenburg was charged with escape from criminal arrest in 2017, and was convicted of multiple drug charges in 2015 and 2016.
