Whitnall High School AP Spanish students will be presenting the 16th Street Community Health Center, 2906 S. 20th St., Milwaukee, with a donation of food, clothing and hygienic items as part of a service learning project Wednesday, Dec. 11, at 9:30 a.m.

Students will continue to collect the following items from community members, fellow students and Whitnall School District staff through Tuesday, Dec. 10:

  • New or gently used clothing for babies or children up to age 3;
  • hygienic items such as diapers, shampoo, bath soap, baby powder, brushes, lotion;
  • non-perishable food items.

In addition, monetary donations will be accepted and used to purchase additional items. Students will assemble care packages with the donated and purchased items and take them to the clinic Dec. 11. There, the AP Spanish students will visit with parents participating in the clinic’s Stork’s Nest parenting class and use their Spanish-speaking skills to discuss culture traditions and daily life with parents and children.

“This project will have students communicate the importance of the language and culture in a community with other Whitnall students, communicate with other members of the community in their native language, and help community members by giving them items they need,” said Sara Brand, AP Spanish teacher at Whitnall High School.
