Take a Hike, Seriously, On One of These Great Nature Trails

There is still plenty of time to get outside and enjoy a nice, long walk.

Looking to stretch your legs or commune with nature, but don’t want to blaze your own trail? No worries! There are park and recreation options aplenty in and around Greenfield.

Greenfield Patch has put together this guide to walking and biking trails in the area.

Wehr Nature Center

Located within Whitnall Park, the Wehr Nature Center has 220 acres and more than five miles of trails. The paths take you through five natural habitats: woodland, wetland, prairie, oak savanna and lake. Signs make self-guided tours easy, but programs and exhibits also are available in the nature center. Organized group nature hikes are available during the school year for a fee.

The center is open 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Daily parking is $3.

Whitnall Park

Where can’t you walk at Whitnall Park? Follow the trails at Wehr Nature Center. Tour Boerner Botanical Gardens. Putt a few holes on the golf course. If you’re looking for walking and biking, though, the Oak Leaf Trail circles the northern edge of the park. For mountain bikers, the three-mile Alpha trail starts at the toboggan hill, near the golf course.

A walkway and trail system at this nearly 35-acre city park connects includes paved paths, a boardwalk through a wetland area and a pedestrian bridge across Honey Creek. Five Life Trail exercise stations also allow people to do various exercises. In the winter, an ungroomed cross-country ski trail is open.

Oak Leaf Trail

The Oak Leaf Trail offers more than 100 miles of trails for bikers, skaters, runners, and walkers – and part of it runs through Greenfield. Trail loops run in parks throughout the Milwaukee County Park System and include off-road paved trails, park drives and streets.

In Greenfield, you can access the Oak Leaf Trail from , at 10777 W. Cold Spring Road.
