Over the years, a number of April Fools’ tricks have kept us laughing. Perhaps you’ve hear of the great Swiss Spaghetti Harvest?
On April Fools’ Day in 1957, BBC news show Panorama announced the good news: Thanks to a mild winter and the virtual elimination of the spaghetti weevil, Swiss farmers were pulling in a bumper crop of spaghetti. An enraptured British audience watched video footage of a Swiss family harvesting pasta, pulling it off trees and placing it in their baskets. Hundreds phoned in, wanting to know how they could grow their own spaghetti tree. BBC’s standard reply was, “place a sprig of spaghetti in a tin of tomato sauce and hope for the best.”
In more recent history, Taco Bell pulled the wool over outraged citizens’ eyes on All Fools’ Day by declaring it had bought the Liberty Bell and was renaming it the “Taco Liberty Bell.”

On April 1, 1996, Taco Bell took out a full-page ad in six major newspapers and announced their major news. The ad stated, “In an effort to help the national debt, Taco Bell is pleased to announce that we have agreed to purchase the Liberty Bell, one of our country's most historic treasures. It will now be called the ‘Taco Liberty Bell’ and will still be accessible to the American public for viewing. While some may find this controversial, we hope our move will prompt other corporations to take similar action to do their part to reduce the country's debt.”
Even the White House got in on the prank. Press secretary Mike McCurry told reporters that privatization efforts were just beginning, “We’ll be doing a series of these. Ford Motor Co. is joining today in an effort to refurbish the Lincoln Memorial. It will be the Lincoln Mercury Memorial.”

Hundreds called the National Historic Park in Philadelphia (where the bell was housed), irate and demanding an explanation. Luckily, the explanation came a few hours later when Taco Bell announced that they had all been duped.
