MINUTES MATTER: Three Bystanders Save Woman's Life - Two Agree to be Recognized for Heroic Actions

Greenfield Fire Department honored those who stepped in, helped save a choking victim's life before rescue could arrive.

GREENFIELD - On Wednesday, the Greenfield Fire Department honored two bystanders who happened to be in the right place at the right time to help save someone's life.

The Incident

On June 4, a woman began choking on her breakfast from McDonald's at 27th St. and Coldspring Rd. and ended up losing consciousness. She had just ordered, and began eating in her vehicle when part of a breakfast burrito became lodged in her throat.

She was in the car at the time, and her family moved her from the vehicle to the median of the road and began waving down travelers for help.

Three bystanders - two nurses and a We Energies employee who was in the area for work, saw the family attempting to wave people down, and stopped to help.

According to authorities, the citizen responders performed the Heimlich maneuver while the woman still had a pulse. Unfortunately, the food remained lodged, and the woman started to lose her pulse.

Recognized
