Video: GHS Football Team to Play First Playoff Game Since 2002

The Hustlin' Hawks will take on Waterford at 7 p.m. Friday.

It's been nine years since the football team has been in the WIAA playoffs.

But the drought ends at 7 p.m. Friday when the Hawks (5-4, 5-3) visit third-seeded Waterford (8-1, 6-1) in the first round of the Division 2 postseason.

Waterford used a balanced offense this fall but relies heavily on getting the ball into the hands of running back Greg Steffens. Steffens led the team with 759 rushing yards on 97 carries with 12 touchdowns.

Running back Jordan Underly added 604 yards with four touchdowns on the ground. In addition, quarterback Zach Fisher completed 38 of 52 passes (73.1 percent) for 830 yards with a touchdown-to-interception ratio of 11-to-1.

Waterford's offensive balance is a far cry from Greenfield's attack. Greenfield had three rushers with more than 593 yards, led by Andy Lucas, who averaged 7.2 yards per carry and finished with 892 yards and nine TDs.

Bathong Pham rushed for 633 yards and quarterback Tyler Laverdure had 593 with eight TDs. Laverdure, however, completed only 12 of 34 pass attempts (35.3 percent) for 191 yards with zero touchdowns and one interception.

Defensively, the Wolverines allowed only 79 points all season, or 8.8 per game, with two shutouts. Their signature win was a 17-14 nonconference victory over Homestead in the second week of the season, after blowing out Brown Deer, 52-13, in the opener.

Greenfield, which has allowed 19.3 points per game, lost to Brown Deer, 35-34, in Week 3.

Greenfield Patch will be at Friday's game and will post a full game recap immediately after the contest.
