Whitnall High School Humanities Class Gets Hands-On Training

The 20 members of Whitnall High School’s humanities class got plenty of hands-on learning this semester.

During the first few months of the school year, students were treated to visits from a special effects makeup artist, a choreographer workshop and most recently, Christopher Elst, a member of the Society of American Fight Directors, who taught the students the art of stage combat.

They learned techniques and principles developed by a stage combat professional and how to perform moves safely while delivering the illusion of danger.

“It’s great to have these professionals, who have these unique careers, come in so the kids can see you can make art if you are invested in it and have a passion for it,” WHS teacher and head of theatre Tom Weissgerber said.
