Whitnall Plans to Light up its Scoreboard

The School Board approved dipping into the district's facilities project contingency funds to purchase a video display scoreboard for the high school's new stadium.

Whitnall football fans will be given a new meaning to scoreboard watching next fall.

On Monday, the Whitnall School Board approved a $115,000 scoreboard that will include a video display that is expected to provide a source of revenue through paid advertising and provide an opportunity for the high school’s broadcast journalism, digital production and communication classes to expand curriculum.

“The belief is that it will pay for itself in a short amount of time,” Superintendent Lowell Holtz said. “And classes at the high school will tie very well into learning how to program the board.”

The Board originally budgeted $30,000 for a static scoreboard, but since then, the district learned it will receive a $20,000 donation from the booster club. On Monday, board members agreed to dip into the project’s contingency fund for the additional $65,000 needed for the upgraded scoreboard, which would be approximately 24 feet wide and 21 feet high, according to Buildings and Grounds Supervisor Matthew Karshna.

Approximately $117,000 remains in the contingency fund.

In a related attempt to generate revenue, the Board also approved the request to seek a sign code waiver from the City of Greenfield in order to lease property on the northeast corner of the high school property near 1-43 and allow a future sign vendor to erect a double-faced LED billboard.

In addition, the Board also approved a plan to spend approximately $140,000 to .

With the Board’s approval, the district will purchase $114,000 worth of hardware after April 1. Minor installation work will begin June 1, and a major wiring and installation project will occur once students leave for the summer.

The project is expected to be completed by Aug. 24.

Board members also approved a boundary change that will from Hales Corners Elementary to Edgerton Elementary.

“All the families that will be affected have been contacted and are fine with the move,” Holtz said.
