April Showers Bring Hudson Lacrosse Victory Over Shattuck-St. Mary’s

Submitted by Chuck McGill

It was another cold, wet game at Houlton last Wednesday, April 23, but Raiders Varsity Lacrosse was still fired up and beat Shattuck-St. Mary’s 14-4.

Shattuck-St Mary's is a coed Episcopal Church-affiliated boarding school in Faribault, Minnesota, and is nationally known for its hockey, soccer, music and figure skating programs – but apparently not lacrosse.

Hudson got 2 goals right away from Juniors Adam Lipps and Joey Hernandez, who would combine to score half of Hudson’s total goals for the game. Hudson led 7-0 after the first quarter and 10-0 at halftime.

The raiders were up 11-0 before Shattuck-St. Mary’s scored their first goal in the third quarter for a score of 11-1.  In the fourth, Hudson scored twice to lead 13-1.  Shattuck-St. Mary’s suddenly started dominating face-offs for offensive possessions and scored 3 goals in a row to make the score 13-4.  Hudson scored the last goal for a final score of 14-4.

Hudson passed the ball extremely well and made good plays with over 5 assists from players including Sophomore Gabe Franck, Sophomore Will Reece, and Senior Cole Bjork.  With two senior offensive players out with injuries, the underclassmen on offense needed to step up, and they did.  Sophomores or juniors scored all of Hudson’s goals, which bodes well for next season.

Scoring for Hudson were Hernandez with 4, Lipps with 3, Sophomores Will Reece and Rusty Selliris with 2 each, and Junior Leo Murray and Sophomores Connor Huhn and Carter Schuett each with 1.
