Graduation and Transformation

What does graduation mean?

So, for those of us in the teaching game, another year has passed -- an eventful one, too!  There's been a lot of articles and comments about the political effect of current legislation on teachers, students, families, and more -- so I'm going to do something a little different here.

I'd like to start by saying congratulations!  So many students moved to the next level a week or two ago, whether its junior high to high school, 3rd to 4th grade, or earning a college degree!  It's pretty massive to me, to think about this, and to have a part in it.

As a teacher, I know there's a lot of adhering to competencies, lesson plans, and so on ... but the spirit behind these controlling entities is transformation.  The students come in with one set of skills, and leaves with another.  Sometimes they come in with certain perceptive abilities, and leave (if we've done our jobs right) with strengthened abilities, better able to perceive and critique the world.

I always think about this when I attend any graduation ceremony.  When the students move their tassels from one side to the other, and cross the stage, this transformation is symbolized, and the student "officially" becomes someone other than who they were.  And that's a pretty awesome thing, I think!

Does anyone have a story of a graduation that means something to them?  Your own, or someone else's?
