St. Croix County’s April Unemployment Rate is 5.2%

The April 2013 unemployment rate for St. Croix County is 5.2 %; making St Croix's the third lowest unemployment rate in the state.

On May 22nd, the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development (DWD) announced the preliminary April 2013 unemployment rates for Wisconsin’s 72 counties. St. Croix County’s rate was estimated at 5.2%, which is lower than March’s rate of 6.1% and February’s rate of 6.7%. One year ago, the county’s unemployment rate was estimated at 5.3%.

DWD said 67 of the 72 counties had rate decreases between March and April; two had no change while three had rate increases. Of Wisconsin’s 32 municipalities with a population of least 25,000 residents, all but two had rate decreases between March and April.

Only two counties had a lower unemployment rate than St. Croix in April. Dane had the lowest rate in the state at 4.9%, followed by nearby Pierce (5.1%), St. Croix (5.2%), La Crosse (5.3%), and Ozaukee (5.8%). Menominee (15.5%) had the highest unemployment rate in April, followed by Iron (14.1%), Vilas (12.3%), Sawyer (12.1%), and Bayfield (12.0%).

St. Croix, Pierce, Polk, and Dunn counties comprise Wisconsin’s Greater St. Croix Valley. In addition to the April rates for St. Croix and Pierce (above), Dunn’s rate was 6.3% (down from 7.0%) and Polk’s rate was 8.6% (down from 9.3%). Year over year, St. Croix and Pierce had lower unemployment rates, but rates were higher than one year ago for Dunn and Polk.

The 13-county Minneapolis-St. Paul-Bloomington MN-WI metro area reported an unemployment rate of 4.9% in April. One year ago, the unemployment rate in the Twin Cities was 5.2%.

The preliminary (seasonally adjusted) unemployment rate for Wisconsin for April was estimated at 7.1%. This is the same rate for March and February. One year ago, the state’s seasonally adjusted rate was 6.9%.

The preliminary (seasonally adjusted) unemployment rate in Minnesota for April was estimated at 5.3%. Minnesota’s seasonally adjusted rate was 5.6% one year ago.

The preliminary (seasonally adjusted) unemployment rate in the U.S. in April was estimated at 7.5%, compared to 7.6% in March and 7.7% in February. One year ago the U.S. rate was estimated at 8.1%.

April’s estimates are preliminary and are subject to revision within the next few weeks.
