Hudson Area Public Library Offers Services In New Ways While Pondering Reopening Options
Non-traditional check out items for kids, including STEAM kits, have been added to curbside pickup.

Your library staff members are tackling the question of when and how to open the Hudson Area Public Library. (For information about other regional libraries, please check their websites.) We’ll share details in next week’s column and on our website, but I want community members to understand the key issues discussed by staff and our Board of Trustees.
We want patrons and staff to be safe. Without question, that’s the top priority. But we also want to be good stewards of taxpayer funds and ensure the people in our service area have access to materials and programs.

St. Croix County’s Department of Public Health is providing guidelines, and we’ll use those along with our own research into libraries’ best practices. It’s more important to create the best model than the fastest model. We appreciate your patience while we do that.
Meanwhile, we’re ensuring patrons can check out materials using our curbside service. You can place orders on your MORE account or by calling 715-386-3101 or emailing hudsonpl@hudsonpubliclibrary.org. We also have a Chat with a Librarian feature on our website. After we get your order, we’ll schedule a contactless pick-up time.
We’re adding some fun nontraditional check out items for kids, including STEAM kits, game kits and play kits. Our lawn games are also available for families to borrow.
We have programming for all ages, too, using a variety of virtual platforms, including a new library YouTube channel. The summer reading program will begin June 1 with an online program called Beanstack, which features great prizes and incentives for reading.
Hudson youth can also take library camps this summer. There’s a writing camp for teens, and younger kids can register for three different camps: STEM and Space, Arts and Crafts, and Games. Our Hudwarts Harry Potter Camp, typically held in August, may be canceled depending on guidelines and how the situation evolves.
