Lunda/Ames Looks Like Low Bidder on St. Croix Bridge Superstructure

The Wisconsin and Minnesota departments of transportation are still evaluated the companies' $380 million bid.

Ladies and gentlemen, we may have a winner. 

The departments of transportation in Minnesota and Wisconsin jointly announced Friday an apparent low bidder for building the superstructure of the new St. Croix Crossing bridge: Lunda/Ames Joint Venture. 

Besides the hybrid box box-girder/cable-stayed "extradosed" bridge, the state agencies said in a statement that the work includes: 

  • Ramp bridge from Highway 95 to the river crossing (south of main bridge)
  • Ramp bridge from the river crossing to Highway 95 (north of main bridge)
  • Highway 36 box girder approach bridge
  • Connecting structure between the river bridge and the Highway 36 approach bridge 
That's about three years' worth of work to get the bridge ready for traffic in the fall of 2016. Project Manager Jon Chiglo told Finance & Commerce the goal was to get the work started in late December or early January. 

The final cost for this part of the project will likely be less than $380 million, Chiglo told the St. Paul Pioneer Press, which reported the other bidders and approximate bids as: St. Croix Constructors Kraemer-Obayashi Joint Venture ($393 million) and PCL Civil Constructors Inc. ($461 million).
