To some, the month of November has a different title and meaning, all together. Over the years, November has also earned the title of “Movember” and become the month of supporting the fight against men’s cancer through fund raising and moustache growing. This year, the O’Connell Family Funeral Home is supporting the cause and bringing awareness to the community they serve. “We have served many families who have lost loved ones to all forms of cancer. This is a small way we can help give back and raise awareness for men’s health in honor of those families and loved ones”, said Mike O’Connell. In recognition of Movember, the O’Connell staff, calling themselves the “MO’Connell Boys”, set up donation pages on the website, movember.com. Owners, Tom and Mike O’Connell, along with directors, Gabe Schauf and Bill Benedict will also be growing moustaches in honor of the event. “It is definitely a conversation starter”, added Gabe. “Most of us here don’t grow moustaches on a regular basis, so when people see us around there will probably be a comment or two. But that gives us a chance to talk about what we are doing and why we are doing it, and hopefully raise some money in the process.” There was some reluctance about being able to look good while growing a moustache, but the guys decided it was everyone or no one. “I thought the best way out of it was to say if Tom does it, I’ll do it. It was my hope that he’d turn the idea down, but instead, he was all for it” mentioned Bill. With that in mind, it was noted that Tom O’Connell has never grown a moustache. The thought of having one was a little unsettling for him as well. “But I decided that for a good cause it would be worth a try” said Tom. Tom also thought this would be a good tribute for his son, Dan, who was known both for his willingness to support charitable events and for sporting a full moustache of his own. Men’s Cancer Facts
Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in men—only skin cancer rates are higher. In fact, 1 out of 6 men will likely receive a prostate cancer diagnosis sometime in their lives. And as far as cancers go, it’s also the second highest killer for men as well.
Cancer of the testicle can develop in one or both testicles in males of any age, including infants and elderly men. Almost half of all cases of testicular cancer are in men between the ages of 20 and 34.
It is recommended that you talk to your doctor about testing as the risk of prostate cancer increases, as you get older. If your family has a medical history of prostate cancer, it is recommended that you talk to your doctor earlier in age (in your late 30’s – early 40’s)
