Sweet Butter Cakery Brings Sweetness to Hudson

Sweet Butter Cakery offers specialty cakes and other tasty treats.

Hudson got sweeter in 2005 when opened and has stayed sweeter ever since.

Co-owner Cathi Herriman said they opened the shop in Hudson to bring something a little different to the area.

"The town already sees a certain amount of tourism," she said. "(Hudson) is seen as a destination location so it’s a good spot for the shop."

But, she said, foot traffic to their shop atop the hill tucked behind a and isn’t their main source of business.

"Custom-ordered cake is our primary business," she said.

And specialty cakes, they do. Especially wedding cakes.

One of the most popular, Herriman said, is the seasonal "Midnight Pumpkin" cake.

The cake is chocolate and pumpkin cakes with chocolate ganache in between and topped with their signature icing.

"That’s one of our most exotic examples,"Herriman said.

Midnight Pumpkin also happened to be one of Herriman’s favorites.

"I have about five favorites," she said with a laugh. "As soon as I start to get bored with something we change it up and create something new or the season changes things."

Other specialty items include a gingerbread cake, bars, cookies, cupcakes and other sweets.

Their website boasts treats like "flaky crust pastries filled with sweet cream cheese, apples, blueberries, cherries, or poppyseeds;" "baklava sticks with honey dipping sauce;" and "carmel, cinnamon, or fruit filled coffee-cake rings and sweet rolls."

In addition to appealing to the sweet tooth, the Sweet Butter Cakery also has an hors d’oeuvres menu.

There are cupcake-sized classic quiches, cheese spread and parmesan spinach puffs.

Though they get little foot traffic they do serve coffee and have a little lounging area. Herriman is quick to point out the cakery is neither a bakery nor a coffee shop.

"We didn’t want to feel like another coffee shop and come up with a theme and décor and look that would be out dated shortly after we opened," the co-owner said explaining the checkered floor and soft decorations in the shop.

That’s not the only thing, in her mind, that sets them apart.

"I think what makes us stand out is that we bake everything on premises," she said while peeling apples. "So we can make our own custom flavors other places can’t."
