United Gear and Assembly is Hiring More Workers in Hudson

United Gear and Assembly is expanding its production. The Hudson factory is looking to hire about 15 people right now and an additional 30-40 within the next year.

Tough layoffs have hit workers at two Hudson manufacturers in the past year and Uline's Hudson facility is at least a year away from opening, but one local factory is expanding and hiring workers.

is looking for "13-18 more employees" right now, according to Craig Dillon, United Gear and Assembly production manager. Looking ahead, Dillon said the company would be looking to hire 30-40 within a year and perhaps 120 more within five* years.

Despite layoffs at other factories in Hudson, Dillon said the manufacturing industry is booming right now.

"We are currently in the boom that we are right now because of the building economy," Dillon said. "We've been purchasing a lot of new machinery, which is going to require more employees. We've also started a seven-day-a-week, three-shift operation."

In the past, United Gear and Assembly operated two shifts, five days per week with a possibility of overtime on Saturdays.

Reaching out to laid-off workers

The company has reached out to human resources  and  to find workers who may have recently been let go by those companies.

"We have gotten in contact with their HR groups," Dillon said. "With Johnson Controls in particular, we have a sign at their facility to let them know that we're hiring. We've also handed out applications in case they haven't seen the sign. We're always looking to keep individuals in our community employed in our community."

About the jobs

The jobs United Gear and Assembly plans to add are full-time, permanent positions. Benefits include health insurance, dental insurance, life insurance, long-term disability, 401 (k), health savings account, profit sharing, 10 paid holidays and tuition reimbursement.

Workers are needed for a variety of jobs, including turning centers, lathes, mills, gear hobbing, broaching, finishing and grinding.

"The people hired could be anything from basic operators who would simply load parts into a machine, to setup technicians who set up the machines for the standard operators, all the way up to application engineers who make the programs."

About the company

The factory began operations in 1981 as West Industries. United Stars Corporations bought the facility in 2003.

"We are a precision manufacturer," Dillon said. "We manufacture anything from gears that go into oil pumps, water pumps, all the way up to transmissions that go into Allison transmissions and Catepillar transmissions for the heavy, off-road mining equipment. We have every operation from start to finish, including the heat treat process."
