Key to awesomeness: For the last 10 years Sarah has been a member of Troop 52381 and had her eyes set on the gold award ever since. “I’ve watched my brothers earn their eagle award and I wanted to be like them,” she said. She decided to create benches because she had done other woodworking projects and enjoyed it and as a member of the sustainability club knew there was nowhere for classes to meet and learn in the forest. “The forest in underutilized at our school by classes because there was no meeting area,” she said. Sarah was able to raise $200 and get coupons and discounts for the supplies of the project and completed it in over 100 hours. She plans to take a younger troop around the forest soon to teach them about some of the learning opportunities there as well as show them her benches. “I want to inspire them to stick with (Girl Scouts) and go for the gold,” she said.
