Authorities Identify Wisconsin State Trooper Who Died in Freeway Auto Crash

WISCONSIN — Authorities have identified the Wisconsin State Trooper who died this morning, after authorities say the officer lost control of his patrol car and struck a tree.

According to the Sauk County Sheriff's office, at about 4:30 a.m. April 11, authorities responded to a single vehicle crash on Interstate 90/94 in Sauk County.

According to reports, emergency responders arrived on scene and discovered the crash involved an on-duty Wisconsin State Patrol Trooper Anthony J. Borostowski. Wisconsin State Patrol has requested the Sauk County Sheriff’s Office conduct the crash investigation.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a Wisconsin State Patrol Trooper was traveling eastbound on I90/94 at mile marker 89.8 when he lost control of his patrol car. The car entered the south ditch where it struck a tree. The Trooper was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Sauk County Coroner.

The identity of the Trooper is not being released at this time pending notification of his family. No other information regarding the crash is available at this time as it is still under investigation by the Sauk County Sheriff’s Office.

Borostowski Honored for Life Saving

Governor Scott Walker released the following statement today after learning Wisconsin State Patrol Trooper Anthony J. Borostowski died in the line of duty after his patrol car struck a tree on Interstate 90/94.

“Our hearts are heavy today as we mourn the loss of Anthony Borostowski who passed away early this morning in the line of duty. Anthony was an outstanding trooper and staff sergeant in the Wisconsin National Guard. I had the honor of meeting him in 2015 when he received the Wisconsin State Patrol’s Lifesaving Award for saving a man’s life by performing CPR. Tonette and I send our prayers to Anthony’s family as they grieve the loss of their loved one. Anthony will never be forgotten.”

State Sen. Van Wanggaard issued the following statement today: “This is an unfortunate reminder that all police duties, even traffic patrol, are inherently dangerous. Please keep the family and friends of this officer, and the entire state patrol in your thoughts and prayers.”

An executive order lowering the flags of the United States and Wisconsin in honor of Trooper Borostowski is forthcoming.

Gov Walker presented the State Patrol award to Borostowski in 2015 after he and a fellow State Tooper responded to a 911 call regarding a man who was not breathing and had no pulse at a residence in New Lisbon in January 2015. They were the first to arrive and began two-person CPR on the man. They continued CPR until the man's pulse was restored and he began breathing on his own.
