1. Regents' budget plan freezes UW-Madison state tuition, adds millions (captimes.com) — UW-Madison students and families could see a state-funded tuition freeze and major campus upgrades if the Universities of Wisconsin win approval for a $730 million operating boost and $2 billion capital plan. The proposal would add $260 million for UW-Madison, support new financial aid for lower-income Wisconsinites, demolish the aging Humanities Building, and add up to 2,000 new dorm beds to ease the housing crunch.
2. Authorities ID the officer who fatally shot a Black man on a... (afro.com) — State investigators have identified the Madison police officer who fatally shot 38-year-old Corey Ruiz in July, a case that sparked days of protests in Madison and renewed calls to address racial justice. Officials say Officer Kiel Baitinger-Peterson, an 11-year law enforcement veteran, fired the shots after responding to reports of someone checking parked cars and an alleged burglary attempt.
3. United Way of Dane County sets $19 million fundraising goal (ibmadison.com) — United Way of Dane County just kicked off its 2026 Community Campaign with a $19 million fundraising goal and a massive volunteer event at the Madison Marriott West. More than 900 volunteers packed over 21,000 ImPacks—care kits headed to local nonprofits that support neighbors in need across Madison and Dane County.
4. Tips to Make a Good Message 2026 (fox47.com) — Local teens are invited to pitch short, original driving-safety messages for the MSG 2 Teens campaign, with Fox47 offering production help if you only submit a storyboard. Entries under 25 seconds can be sent electronically or mailed directly to the station's Madison studio on Big Sky Drive, giving area students a shot at seeing their ideas on TV.
5. Woman flown to Madison hospital after crash with semi in Dodge County (wbay.com) — A 68-year-old woman was airlifted to UW Hospital in Madison with life-threatening injuries after her SUV failed to yield and collided with a semi at a Dodge County intersection. Two juvenile passengers suffered minor injuries, while the semi driver from Milton was evaluated and released at the scene, according to the sheriff's office.
