📰 News we're reading

• Police: Accused stalker's home contained serial killer memorabilia, skeletal remains (local12.com) — A woman who once lived in Madison says a Wisconsin man has stalked her for years, even mentioning wandering around her former city hoping to encounter her. When investigators searched his Fond du Lac home, they reported finding serial killer memorabilia, human remains, and disturbing writings about "hunting" her. The man is now charged with felony stalking and released on bond.

• The Agent Drafts, a Human Approves: Inside State of the Map US 2026 (hackernoon.com) — For three days in June, downtown Madison hosted State of the Map US 2026, drawing geospatial engineers and mappers from across the country to the Capitol Square. The piece explains how talks in Madison showcased AI-drafted map data, serverless map infrastructure, and a strong commitment to keeping humans in charge of approving edits.

• New affordable housing law has something for 'everybody,' expert says (captimes.com) — Madison residents could see more affordable homes and rehabbed properties thanks to a sweeping new federal housing law that loosens rules on key funding streams cities use. Local experts and Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway say provisions for Community Development Block Grants, manufactured housing, and zoning incentives may especially help Madison, while rural-focused measures aim to stabilize low-income housing across Wisconsin.
