📰 News we're reading

1. Taste of Madison wraps up weekend of food, music and community (wmtv15news.com) — Taste of Madison just wrapped up on Capitol Square after drawing thousands of residents and visitors for a weekend of food, music, and community. More than 90 local restaurants participated, with nonprofit groups staffing beverage stands and receiving tip proceeds. Organizers say the long-running festival has now donated over $2.4 million back into Madison-area charities.

2. Wisconsin's 48 tornadoes already make 2026 the second-biggest year on record (madison.com) — Wisconsin has already logged 48 tornadoes this year, making 2026 the state's second-busiest tornado year on record, with several storms hitting southern Wisconsin and the Madison area. Meteorologists warn residents to stay alert, noting that severe thunderstorms and even tornadoes can still form into late fall and early winter, well beyond the usual peak season.

3. No. 11 Northwestern falls to Wisconsin in Badger Classic (dailynorthwestern.com) — Madison's Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course just hosted the Badger Classic, where Wisconsin's women dominated No. 11 Northwestern in the 6000-meter race. A Badger runner claimed first and the team swept the top five spots, while Northwestern packed its finishers close behind. The Wildcats will return to Madison in October for two more meets on the same course.

4. Ambulance-Chaser Ben Crump Demands Wisconsin Cops Use Body Cams; Be Careful What You Wish For (lawenforcementtoday.com) — Madison residents are at the center of a heated fight over whether city police should finally get body cameras, after the fatal July shooting of Corey Ruiz. Attorney Ben Crump and State Rep. Sheila Stubbs are pressuring city leaders, criticizing Madison for skipping a state grant that funded cameras elsewhere, while Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway now promises to include a full program in the 2027 budget.

5. Trump appeals to Supreme Court as time runs out on push to restrict mail voting (adn.com) — Madison voters are expected to start receiving mail ballots soon under Wisconsin's existing rules, even as a court fight continues over President Trump's attempt to tighten mail voting nationwide. State election officials say it's effectively impossible to implement the proposed postal changes in time, so local clerks, including in Madison, are moving ahead to get ballots out early and preserve voting options.
