One Wisconsin High School Topped Every Other For National Merit Semifinalists

MADISON, WI — More than 250 students across Wisconsin have been named Semifinalists in the 2027 National Merit Scholarship Program, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced Wednesday.

Madison West High School led every school in the state with 25 Semifinalists, well ahead of Middleton High School's 20 and Brookfield East High School's 14.

The Wisconsin students are among more than 16,000 Semifinalists nationwide, representing less than 1 percent of U.S. high school seniors, according to NMSC.

Semifinalists are the highest-scoring entrants in each state, drawn from a pool of more than 1.2 million juniors who took the 2025 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test

To advance to Finalist standing, students must complete a detailed scholarship application, be endorsed by a high school official, write an essay and confirm their qualifying test scores with SAT or ACT results.

NMSC expects about 95 percent of Semifinalists to reach Finalist status, and roughly half of those Finalists will go on to win a National Merit Scholarship.

The 2027 competition will award about 6,700 scholarships worth approximately $24 million next spring.
